I am looking at a 2000 F-250 Diesel with a 5 speed manual, 4x4 with 139,000 miles do you think that this truck still has some life left? My work has some that have 200,000 on them and they still run but I thought I would get an opinion from you guys. Thanks

Diesels are known to be going strong at 200,000 +....but you have to take into consideration, what was it used for during those 139,000 miles....was it run through it's required maintenance when it needed it?.... (oil changes, radiator flush, lube, transmission fluid change, filters etc.) Were the miles done with long distance or alot of short trips? All of these must be taken into consideration when looking at miles and when buying anything used....

I can't speak to the diesel. But last year I bought a gas powered '99 Silverado with 134,000 miles on it. So far it's run luck a champ. We even went over 2,000 miles to and from PA to pick up a horse trailer. The only change I wish I could make is to get the 2500 instead of the 1500. But you've got that handled.
My mechanic tells me many farmers around here have trucks with over 130,000 miles on them and going strong.

around here it is very common to get 250,000 to 300,000 miles from a diesel engine IF it is taken care of. That is normal life expectancy of these engines according to the diesel mechanics around the area and that pretty much is told to you at the dealerships when you ask about the diesels.

I am going to the dealer today to look @ it and test drive it. I will see how it drives. My dad is a mechanic and he deals with trucks, dump trucks, big machines, etc. So hopefully he can look it over and see if it is worth it. They are asknig $16999 for it but from what the sales guy said over the phone I could probably get a heck of a deal they have had it for awhile.
Right now I have a 1999 F-250LD with the 4.6L engine and it has 156,000K miles and it is still going strong but my trailer is too big for it and I think it is going to blow the Automatic transmission up.

From what I've read there are many 7.3 liter powerstroke engines going 200k or 300k miles. With that said, I would buy a used truck only if it had never had a chip or programmer in it. The engine in trucks that are chipped often don't last anywhere near as long as a stock engine.
At minimum I would also have the Ford dealer pull and oasis report on it to see what it's history is like. I would also have a good diesel mechanic check it before I bought it.

You can go to the kelly blue book on the web and put in all info on truck and find out what the price should be for private seller, dealer, trade in, etc. $17,000 seems a slight bit high to me, I would think $15,000. But the 250s dont sell around here near as well as the 350s so they are usually lower priced. But different areas have different prices so I dont know the norm for where you live at. Good luck.
